Bonuriya/ ぼんうり屋

Oh my, the first time I ate here I thought “this is real Korean food.”  Every part of the meal from the bancha (kimchi and other starters) to the soup to the koncha (corn tea?) is enjoyable.  Sometimes it’s hard to tell if they’re open or not- the first and last time I went on a weekend it was pretty full but the other few times I’ve been it wasn’t very busy, and sometimes they close when they have Korean classes.  I’m not sure about English but there are plenty of pictures.  I’m not sure I’d go all the way from Tokyo just to eat here, but if it were closer to where I live I’d probably go every week.

Coci

It felt fancy being in a space like this, perched above a small city waterway, a thin pathway with romantic lighting leading to the door.  We only got to see the first floor bar, where we found ourselves coughing a couple times on smoke/steam coming from behind what we thought was probably the bar, but the food and atmosphere made up for it.  Inside was a warm, somewhat dim lighting, and an extensive menu of high quality Asian fusion food.  I had a steak dish, something I normally don’t eat (I’m not sure how “Thai” this place really is), but it was delicious, and I would go more for the overall experience than the particular kind of food.  Reservations are probably necessary on weekends, which might be hard to do in English, but if you need a nice place to go it’s a good choice.

Need to get your burrito fix in Japan?  This place definitely satisfied my stomach.  A la Chipotle, you pick burrito or bowl, the kind of meat, beans, sauces, etc, including cheddar cheese! (Not too common).  If Chipotle is what you compare it to though, your wallet might be dissatisfied with the price and size.  But accept that you’re in Japan and the taste is there and was just enough food for me.  The menu is mainly in English, if not all in English, so foreigners welcome.  We went to the branch in Roppongi, but there are a couple others, and they do take out and it looks like even delivery as well.

Pie Face/ パイフェイス

Do you like your pies with faces on them?  Pie Face serves various savory and sweet hot pies.  Fillings range from steak, curry, clam chowder, to apple, matcha, custard, etc, each with a different face on the outside.  I loved the concept, and the interior was nice as well, but the taste was just OK and gave a semi-fast-food vibe.  I think it’s fun to try it once though.  We went to the Shibuya branch, but there are a couple others as well.

White curry noodles??!  It took one look at an Instagram post to know I had to eat here.  And it was as much an experience as the food was delicious.  There was a line, as I would guess there often is, but not an unpleasantly long wait.  We waited to get seats at the bar (there is a separate room with table seating), and we got to see them making the noodles right in front of us through a glass barrier.  While we knew what we wanted without looking at the menu, there actually is a surprisingly extensive menu that includes other soba and udon dishes, drinks, and some unique appetizers.  I don’t remember what the appetizer that we ate was exactly, but I want to say a combination of potato and cheese and honey of sorts.  It’s in the slightly more expensive than usual price range, but you could tell every dish was made to be good.  One warning- the menu is entirely in Japanese and not easy to read even with some Japanese knowledge (at least for me).  Maybe prepare a picture of the white curry udon on your phone or figure out the menu in advance : P

the 3rd Burger

It has the feel of a semi-fast food burger place, but the store itself is clean and modern looking- I think I was eating off a granite table (the side of which was a bit rough).  And more importantly, they claim to use healthier ingredients.  There are still french fries, but even the meats are different, and there is more of an emphasis on veggies, even veggie smoothies.  Everything tasted fresh and not too bad for my body, and the prices were usual Tokyo restaurant prices.  I don’t know if I’d go out of my way- from Yokosuka to Tokyo- just to eat it, but I’ll definitely go again if I’m nearby.  We went to the Aoyama shop but there are a few others, and takeout is available.

Crisp Salad Works

Maybe one of my favorite places to eat, and always an option when a friend tells me regarding our meeting place, “Oh anywhere in Tokyo is fine.”  In one of Tokyo’s nicer neighborhoods, the prices reflect that and might seem a bit much for a salad served in a recyclable plastic bowl with a plastic fork.  But with comfy seating (blankets to use for when it’s cold) and wide open windows to take in the quiet surroundings, it’s a nice place to take a break from the bustle of the city.  I’ve seen it busy, but not so much that I felt I had to rush.  As for the food, it is all fresh, and each salad is packed with goodies.  I think the first one I tried had chicken, feta cheese, apple, raisins, nuts, etc, and you can choose among a few dressings or even make a completely customized salad.  The menu is in English too, and according to their website they do takeout and delivery too (through finedine.jp and ubereats).
