Nicolai Bergmann NOMU

There is no obvious entrance or signage for this place, as it’s actually inside a flower shop all under the same name.  But it definitely catches the eye, with large windows making up the outside wall, and flowers on display worth up to a couple hundred dollars.  The restaurant is farther inside, which is where it got a little confusing.
You order at a counter in front of the kitchen, and it appeared that we could just take a seat first like at a cafe.  But seats for two were all full, and with no obvious place to wait or put our name down or wait-person to talk to, we flagged someone down who took our name and told us to enjoy the flower shop until a table opened.  Then one of two caucasian workers told everyone waiting for tables to wait by the entrance to the flower shop, from where we were called shortly after.  The two seated next to us at about the same time seemed confused also, and were waiting to be waited on while we were ordering our food at the counter.  When we got back we saw them flagging down the waiter to ask for a menu and being told there is no menu and to please order at the counter.
They have sandwiches for around 1200yen, and a set with salad and soup.  The sandwiches were filling and the soup was good.  “NOMU” I assume refers to “drink” in Japanese, and there is a huge drink menu with 700yen juices and smoothies, but given that the only menu is right at the register, I didn’t want to hold up the line going over the drink menu and just went with the set’s ice tea.  Overall it was nice to go once; nice atmosphere, decorations, being inside flower shop.  I hesitate to give it a high grade because of the prices.  Desserts also looked good but didn’t look worth the cost.  Not to mention the water that dripped on me a few times from a vent above me during my meal.  But I bet the juices are delicious, and I’d consider going again to try one.

Tonkatsu Wakou

IMG_5497This is the Yokohama station branch of a tonkatsu chain restaurant, I think the same chain I get bentos from sometimes at the supermarket.  This branch seems busy but probably never too much of a wait.  It’s really good; I only hesitate because most tonkatsu places are decent, and I wouldn’t come here from Tokyo or Yokosuka just to eat here.  There were several foreigners when we went, and while I don’t remember an English menu it’s a pretty simple menu with pictures and such.

Nana’s Green Tea

A place that caught my eye when looking for food options in the department store by Yokosuka Chuo station.  What probably caught my eye was the dish I chose the first time, the tuna and avocado rice bowl.  There are several such bowls with rice and noodles and soups, and a plentiful drink selection plus some Japanese style desserts.  Being in a department store, the prices are a bit above average, and it’s not a place to linger for a long time.  However, it tasted fresh, the servings were just right, and the interior was nice with blue lights.  Not sure about English menus, but it’s easy to go in.  Just something to consider if in the area, or I think there’s a branch in Yokohama too.

麺屋 庄太 津久井浜本店 / Menya Shota

A small shop a little further down the Keikyu line from Yokosuka Chuo.  It was recommended to me by another teacher at school, and it did not disappoint.  I’m not a ramen enthusiast, but if you love ramen I think it’s worth a visit if you’re in the area.  I can imagine without Japanese you might have a hard time ordering, but if you can just say ramen and you’re fine with that then go for it.

JS Burger Cafe

Perhaps the place that made me fall in love with burgers in Japan more than I ever did in the US (although I did have one place I frequented in Seattle, not including Red Robin, which I don’t really think of as being in the same category).  There are several stores, the first one I went to being the Shinjuku branch, which left a good impression on me. Simple but warm atmosphere with an outside terrace as well.  This time we went together to a branch in Shibuya- not as big, and although there were some nice seats for couples at this branch and got in quickly, not the fanciest place.  Unfortunately, I think said branch shown in the pictures has closed, so the link below will be for one in Shinjuku.  But whichever branch it is you can’t go wrong with the food.  I can’t say it stands out in any particular way among burger shops, and compared to all the places I’ve been to now as I write this it doesn’t seem quite as special anymore, but it has all the standards (ha ha, Journal “Standards”) and does them well.  Not cheap, but they usually aren’t.

Sakura Sushi

If you’re in Shinjuku and craving kaiten-zushi (conveyor belt sushi), this is probably as decent a choice as any other.  It is conveyor belt sushi but it feels a little more authentic because they have the vertical wooden boards behind the counter showing the sushi names and prices in Japanese and there’s no touch screen to order from.  I found myself ordering directly from the chef a fair amount, and there is an English menu if you need one.  I probably wouldn’t go to Shinjuku just to eat here, but to me it tasted a bit above average.

City Shop

We’ve been eating around this area quite a lot lately, and just happened to pass by one day.  It’s bright and spacious with large windows, and feels just like most shops in the Omotesando area do- casual but on the nicer end.  City Shop is a deli full of healthy and organic goodies, mainly fruits and vegetables, with some meat and pastas and such. You choose between a salad + 2 items from the deli, or 5 items from the deli without salad for a couple hundred yen more.  I had salad topped with quinoa (not very common here), some also not very common fruits, and chicken, and some special ice tea.  I believe they had fruity water for free too.  Not cheap but I’d go again.
