Bubby’s/ バビーズ

Apparently a New York classic, Bubby’s is your one-stop-shop for your American food cravings.  What drew me in was the blue cheese burger, but they have everything from house-made lemonade, to macaroni and cheese, key-lime pie, banana split, nachos, steak, and even breakfast food for a couple hours like eggs benedict and smoked salmon bagels. After eating just the blue cheese burger, I thought I would eat here all the time if it weren’t as expensive as it is.  Prices enough for pause, a bit above average.  But one of my best meals in recent memory.

JS Burger Cafe

Perhaps the place that made me fall in love with burgers in Japan more than I ever did in the US (although I did have one place I frequented in Seattle, not including Red Robin, which I don’t really think of as being in the same category).  There are several stores, the first one I went to being the Shinjuku branch, which left a good impression on me. Simple but warm atmosphere with an outside terrace as well.  This time we went together to a branch in Shibuya- not as big, and although there were some nice seats for couples at this branch and got in quickly, not the fanciest place.  Unfortunately, I think said branch shown in the pictures has closed, so the link below will be for one in Shinjuku.  But whichever branch it is you can’t go wrong with the food.  I can’t say it stands out in any particular way among burger shops, and compared to all the places I’ve been to now as I write this it doesn’t seem quite as special anymore, but it has all the standards (ha ha, Journal “Standards”) and does them well.  Not cheap, but they usually aren’t.

Golden Brown/ ゴールデンブラウン

IMG_2558A burger place in the fancy shmancy Omotesando Hills.  I normally would avoid Omotesando Hills since most everything else inside is way above my spending level.  But I had it on my list before I realized it was in there, and I was there replacing the cable for my Bose headphones anyway. (Ok, I guess for Bose I would go in there xP).  And as I thought, the restaurant itself wasn’t that fancy given the location.  Pretty normal prices for your gourmet burger.  I got just a normal hamburger and fries, no cheese because it’s cheaper that way.  The burger was good- just the right amount of sauce and the meat was well cooked and just the right amount of juicy.  The fries were meh.  All in all I had no complaints and enjoyed my meal, but there weren’t any burgers on the menu that stood out to me.  They had avocado and mushrooms and such, but normally I would go for something like gorgonzola cheese or pear, so I’m not sure I’ll go again.  But if you’re in the area go for it ^^

the 3rd Burger

It has the feel of a semi-fast food burger place, but the store itself is clean and modern looking- I think I was eating off a granite table (the side of which was a bit rough).  And more importantly, they claim to use healthier ingredients.  There are still french fries, but even the meats are different, and there is more of an emphasis on veggies, even veggie smoothies.  Everything tasted fresh and not too bad for my body, and the prices were usual Tokyo restaurant prices.  I don’t know if I’d go out of my way- from Yokosuka to Tokyo- just to eat it, but I’ll definitely go again if I’m nearby.  We went to the Aoyama shop but there are a few others, and takeout is available.

Grill Burger Club SASA

Just maybe my favorite burger place.  Somehow after coming to Japan I’ve been into burgers more, perhaps because it’s more of a gourmet thing here.  They say their burger, buns, and sauces are made from scratch, and it tastes like it.  Besides burgers that come in three different sizes, they also have sandwiches, hot dogs, beers, and a some cocktails.  What made me fall in love with this place was what I ordered the first time I went- the pear burger. Yes, a burger with pear on it.  There are several burger choices, usuals and a few more unique choices.  Check it out!
